1. What is Origami Architecture?
2. How old this OA tradition is?

1) What is origamic architecture?
To me, origamic architecture is an art form that combines traditional Japanese
origami folding techniques and cutting of the paper to produce 3-D pop-up paper
sculptures. Masahiro Chatani, a professor of architecture,
"discovered/invented" this art form as a teaching aid in his architecture
classes. Unlike traditional origami, folding and
cutting is necessary to produce these pop-ups.

2) How old is this OA tradition?
Chatani published his first book of patterns, "Origamic Architecture", in 1983
so I would guess that he discovered this art form a year or two
before. But, since I've never seen a definitive date when he actually
came up with this art form, I can only guess based on when he published his
first pattern book. Chances are he developed this art form many
years before he decided to publish the patterns so it's anybody's guess about
the actual year.

Just came across 6 new patterns that can be printed out and cut. They
are original patterns by Mr. Rene Bui and they look pretty interesting.
Here they are: http://www.multimania.com/baudbui/
Click on "plier - paper work" to access the OA page.

Happy cutting!!!!

Hello there, I just got a pile of OA books but I'm having a little trouble
putting some of the 180 degree pieces together. The Umbrella for instance,
The two halves don't meet correctly when the model is openned, as the
instructions are not that clear (being mostly in Japanese) I woundered if I
was doing something wrong or if anyone can give me any handy hints.
thanks

Hi Jenny:
From which OA book are you making this Umbrella pattern? I do not think
I have this book but you can contact Gerry Stormer. He has almost all OA
books and made all patterns. If Gerry doesn't have the answer I do not know
who may have it. His email is at his home page:
  http://homepages.msn.com/HobbyCt/gstormer/ .
You can also send me the pattern and I can do it for you, if you like, I
would be more than happy to do it!
Marivi.

Hi Jenny,

There are a few things that might possibly be causing your card not to open
correctly. The strings could either be too tight or too loose. If this is
the case, it's possible that the model will not meet correctly and/or sit on
the base paper properly. If you don't already do this, it's a good idea to
tape the strings down first so they're not permanently affixed so you can
make any changes once you've tested the card to see if it opens and closes
correctly. Once you're sure the card mechanics are correct you can
permanently affix the strings so they can't move/slip out of position.
Another cause for this problem might be that the individual pieces of the
card haven't been pieced together properly so there's no way they can meet
when the card is opened. Make sure each piece has been cut precisely and
that they are all pieced together exactly as the pattern indicates. I'm not
familiar with this specific pattern but some of Chatani's 180º cards with
string are tricky to do and get to sit properly when opened. The thickness
of the paper you're using could also be playing a role with how these cards
open. I've found that one can not use too thick of a paper for cutting the
individual pieces. Once they are pieced together the thickness of the paper
keeps the model from opening and closing properly. One other thing I've
found that might help this problem is to let the card sit open for a while
to see if that helps the situation. Many times, if these cards are stored
in the closed position for long periods of time, they don't want to open
properly. Once they've been opened for a while they seem to "fall" back
into the correct alignment and look great. I hope these suggestions are
helpful. Good luck!

Thanks I guess I just need to practice more. It's a really simple little
thing from 'Origamic Architecture of Masahiro Chatani' but looks really cute
in the pictures. I think my string might have been too tight, I'll let you
know if I manage it. I'll be putting up a website with some OA pics and
patterns sometime soon so you may well see it there!

Hi,

I'm new to OA and keen to get going but I could do with some patterns etc...
Masahiro Chatani's pattern books are out of print and I haven't been able to
find an alternative in the void!
Can anyone help me? Is there an archive to this mail-list? A FAQ?
